Maropeng, the official visitor centre for the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site in Sterkfontein, Gauteng, has unveiled its June calendar of events, which includes a Father’s Day Lunch, cave tours and stargazing.
Maropeng will host two lunches on June 15. Guests can choose between a family carvery at the Maropeng Tumulus Restaurant and a five-course brandy-pairing lunch at Maropeng Hotel. The five-course lunch will be prepared by Maropeng's head chef Peter Langa in conjunction with Cape Legends Brandy Expert Jonathan Perrin. The lunch menu includes a choice of the finest brandies.
‘Cooper’s Cave Tour’ will take place on June 7 at 09h00. The tour is open to all ages and will give guests and their children an opportunity to learn more about the fossils embedded in the rocks in Sterkfontein.
The day’s activities include a walking tour, an interactive fossil and site talk, exploring a cave, searching for fossils in recently excavated deposits as well as the opportunity to learn how to make stone tools, followed by a picnic.
On June 28 at 17h30 ‘Stargazing at the Tumulus Restaurant’ will feature some of the winter "Holly Wood" astronomical objects. The Scorpius to Crux (Southern Cross) area, is the most spectacular region of the heavens visible in the Southern hemisphere during the winter months.
The evening includes an illustrated dinner by Maropeng’s resident astronomer, Vincent Nettmann, a chance to stargaze through a large aperture telescopic (subject to weather conditions) and a buffet dinner.
