SANParks has held a series of engagements with cultural and religious groups on the use of caves and other spaces within Table Mountain National Park (TMNP). The aim was to find a constructive way forward that balances the needs of these groups with the responsibility to prevent illegal activities and ensure other park users’ experiences are not negatively affected.
SANParks confirmed that while these natural areas would remain accessible for cultural and religious practices, their ecological integrity must be preserved and the safety of all visitors safeguarded.
A guiding principle in the engagements was the inclusion of indigenous knowledge, with outcomes feeding into the drafting of TMNP’s 10-year management plan.
SANParks has previously consulted with the South African Speleological Society, scientists, and interest groups on cave ecosystem conservation. In the recent discussions, stakeholders stressed that access should accommodate spiritual needs and volunteered to work with SANParks to raise awareness of issues such as littering and fires. They also called for collaboration that is transparent, consensual and respectful of different traditions and customs.
