New slackpacking trail launched in Maputaland

A new multi-day luxury hiking experience linking Lake Sibayi and the Kosi Lakes has launched in northern KwaZulu-Natal.

Referred to as the “Trail of Two Lakes”, the five-day route traverses remote sections of Maputaland, combining guided hikes with boat cruises, e-kayaking, snorkelling, beach picnics and wilderness eco-camp stays.

The itinerary follows the route between Lake Sibayi and the Kosi Bay estuary, taking guests through wetlands, coastal forests, raffia palm systems and secluded beaches.

Highlights include an e-kayak crossing on Lake Sibayi, snorkelling at Lala Nek’s “natural aquarium”, a guided hike to Black Rock and a boat cruise through Kosi Bay’s 700-year-old Thonga fish traps.

Led by specialised guides with local knowledge, guests will carry only day packs while luggage is transferred between camps by ground crew. The trail is fully catered with dining at camps and at remote locations along the route. It also includes selected drinks, massage treatments and seasonal turtle tracking excursions.

Departures will accommodate between six and 10 guests with hiking distances ranging from 12km to 15km per day on moderate coastal terrain. The experience will operate year-round, with turtle season running from November to March and whale season from June to August.
