New viewing platform for Big Hole

CONSTRUCTION on a new viewing platform at the Big Hole in Kimberley is nearing completion. The new platform, due to open on November 25, suspends visitors right over the edge of the hole, according to a statement released by the De Beers Group. The new platform forms part of the ‘Big Hole Project’ aimed at developing the town into a “world-class tourism destination”. The project has been run as public private partnership between De Beers, the Northern Cape provincial government, Sol Plaatje Municipality, Frances Baard District Municipality and Northern Cape Tourism. The first phase saw the construction of a 13-room guesthouse, while the second phase focused on the development of a Big Hole visitors centre. In addition to the platform, De Beers is constructing an audiovisual theatre, and a simulated underground experience. Sue Lewitton (suel@nowmedia.co.za)
