Minister of Tourism, Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane, has joined the tourism sector in conveying condolences to the family and associates of one of industry’s most beloved members, Joe Motsogi – fondly known as ‘Bra Joe’.
He passed away last week (June 25).
Motsogi founded JMT Tours & Safaris in 1997 after having worked in the entertainment industry for a number of years. He started guiding on a freelance basis, mainly for Springbok Atlas, after qualifying as a tourist guide in 1996.
His wife Sophie is a director and co-owner of JMT Tours.
Motsogi played a key role in the drawing up of guidelines for tourist guiding and served as chairman of Gauteng Guides Association. He also served as Chairman of Gauteng Tour Operators Association and as first Vice Chairperson and Treasurer of the SATSA Gauteng Chapter.
Over the years, he has garnered several awards, including receiving the Sowetan Sanlam Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 1999.
“Tourist guiding is a very critical component of the tourism value chain and Mr Motsogi played an essential role. We are forever grateful for his patriotism in conducting his work and his immense contribution in uplifting the image of our country as a must-visit destination,” said Kubayi-Ngubane.
Amongst other prominent global figures, Motsogi hosted Forest Whittaker, Lil Jon and Chris Rock as well as media personalities from various countries on his tours.
