Proximity problem: ATTA calls for clearer wildlife boundaries

The African Travel & Tourism Association (ATTA) has released a new white paper – “Too Close for Comfort: Rethinking Human-Wildlife Boundaries for a Sustainable African Future” – addressing the growing issue of tourists getting “too close for comfort” to wild animals.

ATTA CEO Kgomotso Ramothea said: “Getting ‘too close’ is one of the sector’s greatest risks. Setting clear, respectful boundaries enables local operators to lead the world in delivering wildlife experiences that are ethical and more meaningful.”

Developed with input from EcoTraining, Great Plains Conservation, Marine Dynamics and Pangolin.Africa, the white paper introduces a 4D framework (distance, duration, density and directional freedom) alongside practical tools such as guest briefings, sightings logs and self-assessment checklists.
