Rare sighting of elusive Knysna elephant

A recent sighting of the Knysna elephant on farmland within the Knysna Forest has sparked widespread interest across the Garden Route. The elephant was captured on video and in photographs, reaffirming her continued presence in the area.

SANParks, which has been monitoring the animal through discreet, non-invasive camera traps, confirmed the sighting. “We encourage the public to celebrate her presence responsibly by not revealing her location or trying to track or approach her as such actions could harm her and those pursuing her,” SANParks said.

The organisation is currently conducting a comprehensive risk assessment to inform future decisions about the management and protection of the Knysna elephant. SANParks noted that the process is ongoing, and outcomes will be communicated publicly and transparently once complete.

The Knysna elephant is the same species as elephants found elsewhere in South Africa. Data collected by SANParks indicates that, when followed by people, the elephant alters her speed and direction. While camera footage shows her relaxed in low human-use areas, analysis of dung samples from situations where she was followed revealed elevated stress hormone levels.
