SA’s oldest building set for upgrade

The castle’s seven building will be refurbished.

Cape Town’s Castle of Good Hope is receiving an R84-million makeover, News24 reports.

The 350-year-old castle originally served as a replenishment station for ships passing through the dangerous coast of the Cape, between the Netherlands and Dutch East Indies (Indonesia).

For the past fifty years, the Castle has housed paintings and artworks at the William Fehr Collection. Its five bastions (built for defensive fire in several directions) named Leerdam, Buuren, Katzenellenbogen, Nassau and Oranje, will be refurbished over the next 21 months.

The Castle's seven buildings will also be repainted and re-carpeted. Murals will be refurbished and the Dolphin Pool will be re-plastered and renovated.
