Sheraton announces new Ethiopia hotel

Bahir Dar in Ethiopia’s Amhara region is set to add a new international-branded hotel to its hospitality offering following the launch of the Four Points by Sheraton Tana Hotel development.

The 3.3 billion birr (US$20.9 million) project, developed by MIDROC Investment Group on the site of the former Tana Hotel, is expected to be completed within 18 months and will feature 120 guest rooms, four restaurants, a conference venue accommodating more than 1 000 delegates and leisure facilities including a swimming pool.

At the launch announcement, Ethiopia’s Deputy Prime Minister, Temesgen Tiruneh, said: “This major project marks a significant step forward for the rise of Bahir Dar and our country as a tourism destination while also contributing to economic recovery.”

MIDROC said the Bahir Dar project joins other Four Points by Sheraton developments currently under construction in Jimma and Hawassa.

During the launch visit, Tiruneh also inaugurated the Felege Ghion Eco Resort and toured infrastructure projects including the Bahir Dar Stadium, a new airport terminal and corridor development projects.
