Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company (TMACC) has received formal notification that staff members affiliated to the South African Commercial Catering Workers Union (SACCAWU) will strike from Wednesday, September 28, after failing to reach a settlement on annual salary increases. As a result, some operational changes have been implemented to limit the impact on visitors using the cableway during the strike.
Cableway operations will continue throughout the industrial action, albeit with a limited number of staff, which will restrict services. Operational hours will be reduced and affected visitors will be able to obtain a refund in line with standard terms and conditions. Please check the website www.tablemountain.net for frequency of trips during this period.
The following outlets will be operational during this period: the kiosk and the exit shop at lower station, and Table Mountain Café and the shop at the top station. The top station kiosk, visitor centre and WiFi lounge will be closed during this period.
Visitors are encouraged to buy tickets online from www.tablemountain.net.
SACCAWU is asking for a 15% increase and TMACC is offering 9%. “Our initial offer to the union was a tiered offer of between 7% and 10% favouring lower earners,” said Wahida Parker, MD of TMACC. “We have indicated our willingness to negotiate on the tiered approach but this has been rejected. We will continue to explore ways to resolve this impasse and do everything in our power to contain any tensions that may arise out of this wage dispute,” said Parker.
