Zimbabwe banks run out of money
BANKS across Zimbabwe are running out of bank notes. This comes after Reserve Bank Governor, Gideon Gono, lopped ten zeros off the Zimbabwean dollar on Friday, August 1. Gono also increased the daily cash withdrawal limit without increasing the supply of money to bank branches, resulting in many banks running out of notes. The fact that many banks have not yet received the new bank notes, and that those that have are struggling to reconfigure equipment to handle the new currency, is adding to the problem, resulting in shortages of both new and old currency notes and long bank queues in most centres. Old high-denomination bank notes remain in use in most locations.
