Wine estates rally to replace Stellenbosch’s trees

Wineries across Stellenbosch have significantly exceeded their tree-planting goal following a 2024 storm that caused widespread damage, including the loss of more than 200 trees and the destruction of heritage buildings on wine estates.

Led by the Stellenbosch Wine Routes board, the campaign initially aimed to replace 1 000 trees. To date, more than 6 300 trees have been planted.

Among the largest contributors were Villiera Wines, with over 2 000 trees planted, and De Zalze Winelands Golf Estate, including Kleine Zalze Wines, with 3 258 saplings planted.

The tree-planting initiative was launched in response to the June 2024 storm, which uprooted trees across farms and urban areas and caused a fire at Blaauwklippen that destroyed the Manor House and Jonkershuis. The storm also uprooted Stellenbosch’s oldest tree planted more than 200 years ago.

Stellenbosch Wine Routes General Manager Elmarie Rabe said the programme focuses on indigenous trees, while English oaks will be replaced with pin and water oaks.

The campaign includes a commemorative aspect. In collaboration with the Stellenbosch Trail Fund, trees are being planted along the Eerste River to honour individuals who have contributed to the region’s wine tourism sector. This winter, 10 trees will be planted to commemorate former board chairpersons, founding members and the late Danie Steytler Senior of Kaapzicht, among others.
