The Manta Resort has launched its reimagined Underwater Room developed by Genberg Underwater Hotels. It is the third-generation of the underwater room concept.
Submerged off the coast of Pemba Island in Tanzania, the permanent installation is a decade in the making. It is anchored to a nearby reef in a way that is said to minimise impact on the seabed.
The structure was built using marine-grade steel with corrosion protection designed to withstand tropical conditions.
It features above-water living spaces and a submerged bedroom, positioned three metres below the surface of the Indian Ocean.
The bedroom is fully self-contained with climate control and ventilation. It has floor-to-ceiling windows on three sides to maximise ocean views. Submerged floodlights are said to attract fish from the reef.
Revenue from the property is intended to support reef restoration, marine research and community programmes while supporting sustainable fisheries and creating local employment.
“The underwater room has shown that a very small footprint can still create meaningful impact,” says Matt Saus, CEO and Co-Founder of The Manta Resort. “It shows how tourism and innovation, when carefully managed, can contribute to protecting marine ecosystems and supporting coastal communities.”
