Are salaries reflecting tourism’s road to recovery?

Just over a quarter (26%) of the 169 respondents who participated in Tourism Update's monthly poll – to determine what percentage of their salary tourism workers are paid every month – received 100% of their salary in October.

This is 3% higher than last month’s results. However, the number of respondents receiving over 60% of their salaries stayed more or less the same, with 7% of poll participants saying they earned between 80% and 99% of their salaries. The percentage was the same for September.

The next tier (60% to 79%) saw a two percentage point decrease in earnings for October (13%) over the September figure (15%). However, the 40% to 59% tier level jumped to 19% for October compared with September’s 12%.

This seems to indicate a gradual overall improvement in salary percentages from 40% upwards, with 65% earning above 40% of their salaries.

In the informal survey, 15% were unemployed as a result of COVID-19 (17% in September), 12% were earning below 19% of their salary (19% in September) and a total of 9% were earning between 20% and 39% of their salary (over 8% in September).
