Beware! SAA clamps down on luggage

SAA says it is tightening up its monitoring of baggage allowances, particularly hand luggage, on all flights. It says this is to ensure that aircraft remain within safety weight restrictions which affect the take-off performance of the aircraft. Surveys conducted by SAA revealed that customers on average were exceeding the maximum amount of hand luggage allowed on board. SAA plans to conduct a further survey on its Johannesburg - London flights and will be weighing passengers, together with their hand luggage before boarding. Checked in baggage allowances are 20kgs for economy class, 30 kgs for business class and 40 kgs for first class. Hand luggage allowances are one piece of luggage weighing 8kgs in economy and two pieces of 8kgs each on business. “Weight restrictions on baggage are there for the safety of all customers and we ask that all our customers stringently adhere to the allowances,” says Captain Colin Jordaan, SAA gm of Flight Operations.
