LONDON has been brought to a standstill due to a series of bomb blasts on the public transport system. Christine Waring, VisitBritain’s Johannesburg contact centre manager, told TNN that as yet, the office has had no communication from London regarding today’s bomb-blasts in the city’s transport systems. She said at 13h15: “We are expecting a press release shortly, probably after Tony Blair has spoken. All we know is no buses are running in the city centre, the roads are being cleared and the whole underground system has been shut down.” Virgin Atlantic Airways said in a statement that the Heathrow Express and Heathrow Connect, are experiencing major disruption but there is no disruption to Virgin’s flight schedule at this point. Virgin said it would “aim to book passengers on the next available flight” should they not reach the airport in time. BA spokesperson, Stephen Forbes similarly said BA would rebook or reroute passengers who do not reach the airport in time, but not refund them. This is applicable to flights departing London before 15h00 only. Forbes said more information on BA flights departing Johannesburg is not available at the moment. (Lucy Siebert and Kate Nathan)
