Bumper cruise season to boost Durban’s tourism economy

Durban is poised to further cement its status as Africa’s premier cruise destination as the global spotlight turns to the city for the 2025/26 cruise season.

Running from November 2025 to June 2026, the season is expected to draw a surge of international visitors, showcasing Durban’s rich culture, world-class port facilities and its strategic position as the gateway to the Indian Ocean.

The season will officially set sail with the arrival of flagship vessels such as MSC Opera and Rennies Europa, marking Durban’s grand return as a top-tier port of call.

Throughout the season, the city will welcome an impressive line-up of prestigious cruise ships including Queen Mary 2, Silver Dawn, Azamara Onward and Seven Seas Navigator – each offering travellers memorable experiences steeped in Durban’s hospitality and vibrant heritage.

This season also marks a strategic push to position Durban as Africa’s ultimate cruise destination and playground.

Recognising the cruise industry’s growing contribution to the local economy, the city is gearing up to host thousands of visitors from around the world who will explore Durban’s shores for leisure and adventure.

Building on last year’s strong performance, projections for the 2025/26 season highlight significant economic benefits.

It is expected to attract approximately 255 000 cruise visitors, contributing directly around R762 million (US$44.6 million) to the city’s economy.

When considering the multiplier effect, including indirect and induced impacts, the total economic influence rises to about R1.12 billion (US$65.5 million).

Overall, the combined direct, indirect and induced contributions to Durban’s GDP are estimated at nearly R1.88 billion (US$110 million).

These figures primarily stem from onshore spending by cruise visitors and are expected to support about 3 401 jobs while generating over R140.5 million (US$8.2 million) in taxes for the city.

Durban’s unique charm will be displayed through cultural showcases and local integration initiatives.

Visitors will enjoy mini pop-up fashion shows, authentic cuisine, craft displays and storytelling that reflect the city’s vibrant identity.

Beyond its vibrant harbour and beautiful beaches, Durban acts as a gateway to some of South Africa’s most renowned attractions, offering adventure, endless tranquillity, cuisine, edutainment and new discoveries that contribute to its status as a global gem.

Visitors can venture on exciting safari game drives just a few hours from the city where they have the opportunity to encounter the Big Five in pristine natural reserves.
