Cape hotel promotes upliftment through education

CAPE Town’s The Vineyard Hotel, under the leadership of general manager Lex Petousis, together with the University of Stellenbosch and the JL Zwane Centre has introduced ‘The Vineyard Hotel Education Initiative’ with the intention of tapping into the enormous capacity of Guguletu’s children by providing them with the necessary tools to achieve a brighter future. “Education and knowledge of technology are essential in today’s ever-changing world and basic educational resources such as computers, desks, stationary, and properly qualified teaching staff require ongoing funding. Every child has the right to education, however the discrepancies in the quality and amount of resources between educational institutions are absolutely enormous resulting in the underprivileged, once again, being disadvantaged when entering the working world,” said Petousis. He said every guest staying at The Vineyard Hotel would be requested to make a donation towards ‘The Vineyard Hotel Education Initiative’ and all funds received would be handed over to the Rainbow After-School Study Programme, which provides 80 to 100 students with two hours of additional high-quality educational lessons each day. Particular emphasis is placed on English, mathematics and science. The 180-room four-star hotel is situated in Newlands . (Miguel de Sousa)
