Collaboration needed to combat wildlife poaching

Officials in Namibia and Botswana have highlighted the need for increased collaboration in security measures in protected wildlife areas as poaching continues to be a challenge.

This was reported by the Botswana Daily News, following the 28th meeting of the Botswana/Namibia Joint Permanent Commission on Defence and Security earlier this month where the issue was raised by the Minister for Presidential Affairs, Governance and Public Administration, Kabo Morwaeng.

Morwaeng said evidence showed that poachers had become more sophisticated in their use of the use of deadly weapons and said it was therefore necessary to enhance anti-poaching interventions.

“I am confident that the resolutions passed during this session will go a long way in strengthening security in our respective countries and along our common border. The responsibility of ensuring that all resolutions passed today are implemented successfully and on time, rests with the stakeholders,” he said.

The Namibian Minister of Defence and Security, Penda Ya Ndakolo, added:Namibia expects our two countries to continue ensuring that the defence and security institutions, especially those responsible for controlling our common borders work more closely to prevent and combat the most common cross-border crimes and security threats that affect both countries.”
