Durban ups security measures

IN a move to improve security in the city, Durban will install an additional 140 cameras in areas around the city’s central business district and beachfront. These will compliment existing cameras around the city, which according to the city’s mayor, Cllr Obed Mlaba, has been successful in lowering the levels of crime in the busy parts of the city. According to a report released in December, the CCTV cameras have been very successful, with 12 arrests having been made on December 16, 2005 alone. There has also been significant recovery of stolen goods as well. The decrease in crime bodes well for the city that is trying to revive its beachfront and adjacent tourism attractions.
