Eritrea-Ethiopia strengthen ties through additional flights

Eritrean Airlines has announced flights between Asmara and Addis Ababa.

Eritrean Airlines has confirmed that it will commence flights between Asmara, Eritrea, and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from August 1. The flights complement the daily Ethiopian Airlines flights, launched in mid-July.

CEO of Eritrean Airlines, Nasreddin Ibrahim, told The Reporter in an interview, that the three-times-weekly service would be followed in September by a twice-weekly Assab-Addis Ababa flight.

The announcement supports the thawing relations between the two countries. “We want to establish a strong co-operation with Ethiopian Airlines. We will discuss the possibilities that we can work together. We may even sign [a] codeshare agreement,” said Ibrahim.

CEO of Ethiopian Airlines, Tewolde Gebremariam, told The Reporter that talks with Eritrean Airlines had focused primarily on co-operation between the airlines rather than the purchase of equity, which would only come later.
