THE Grande Roche hotel in Paarl, Western Cape, is celebrating its tenth anniversary this month. Since it opened its doors in December 1991, this five-star estate hotel has become one of the top international attractions in the winelands. A few milestones: * Within only a few short months of opening, Grande Roche received its full five-star status. It was the first hotel in South Africa to receive the South African Tourism Award for Hotel of the Year in 1995. * The hotel was honoured by Relais & Châteaux, a Paris-based independent association of hoteliers and restaurateurs, in November 1994. * General manager, Horst Frehse, who has been at the helm since the opening was named Businessman of the Year by the Paarl chamber of Commerce in 1996 – and was the winner of the 1999 Cape Cigar Hospitality Award. A key factor in the hotel's success has been Bosman's Restaurant - still the first and only hotel restaurant in Africa to achieve Relais Gourmand status and selected as South Africa's best Châine Restaurant for 1996 by the highly respected group of gastronomes, the Châine des Rôtisseurs, says Frehse.
