SOL Kerzner and Kerzner International Limited donated R20m to the construction of the new School of Tourism and Hospitality at the University of Johannesburg. Said Kerzner: “We have to ensure we achieve the highest standards of education in order to create an unforgettable attitude of welcome in South Africa.” Among the guests at the official opening was deputy president Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, who stressed the importance of functional and down-to-earth education. She said: “Tourism is about people. We should constantly look to upgrade our tourism offering by staying in touch with the community.” In a pre-recorded video message, former president Nelson Mandela welcomed the new school saying tourism is a major growth industry in South Africa, which plays a pivotal role in job creation. “This new international standard hotel school, with its state-of-the art facilities, is poised to realise a vision of providing world-class graduates to our expanding hospitality industry.” (Dorine Berger)
