KNP restores camp after devastating fire

LOWER Sabie Camp, situated in the south-eastern Kruger National Park (KNP) and one the park's most popular camps before it was destroyed by a fire early in 1998, will be upgraded and fully restored to the tune of R10,5m. The newly appointed Lower Sabie management team falls under the leadership of hospitality services manager, Garth Holt, who was previously camp manager of Crocodile Bridge Camp. Deputy managers are Pieter du Plessis and Miriam Rapoo. The upgrading project will provide a new main complex on the north-western side of the existing camp, housing a reception area, shop and restaurant. A day visitors area, swimming pool and campsite - featuring 24 new luxury tents - are also included in the plans. Construction on the main complex is expected to be completed by July 2002. The new en-suite double tents will be on the booking system from September and will be ready for occupation by December 12 this year. Spokesperson for KNP, William Mabasa, says Lower Sabie was once the park's busiest camp, ascribed mainly to its prime location in the park, offering good game viewing routes. (Adéle Mackenzie)
