Moyenne Island in Seychelles declared a national park

MOYENNE Island owner, Brendon Grimshaw, has signed an agreement with the Seychelles Ministry of Environment to designate Moyenne Island as a national park.

According to Grimshaw, a British author, the island has changed a lot since he first arrived there 35 years ago, with only a few trees back then.  Now it has over 40 endemic palm trees, including 13 coco de mer. A total of 110 giant tortoises were brought to the island where they now live in their natural habitat and there are a variety of bird species.

The Seychelles government has described the occasion as an important event in the history of conservation in the country and said it looked forward to supporting other private island owners with their conservation projects.
