New community-based tourism project launched

THE newly-opened community-based 2 Oceans Craft and Culture Centre is fast becoming the new tourism jewel along Kommetjie Road, on the much frequented Cape Point Route. The establishment of the centre benefits the neighbouring communities of Red Hill, Ocean View and Masiphumelele. The project is a joint venture between the Noordhoek Valley Training Centre Campus of the South Peninsula College, The City of Cape Town, the relevant local tourism bureaux, Peninsula Tourism and the community. The centre includes the Crafters ' Arena, where handmade crafts are on display and craft demonstrations by the local community can be viewed, Sonwabile (We are happy!) Restaurant which offers African, Malay and South African cuisine, the Kraal Theatre, an indoor/outdoor community theatre, which allows tourists to participate in interactive drumming sessions, amongst others and the Kommetjie Road Market, an informal trading market housed in a thatched boma. Plans are underway to set aside one day a month for a fully fledged craft market. Township tours by accredited community tourist guides can also be arranged from the centre. The centre is open on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 09h00 to 17h00. (Adéle Mackenzie)
