There is overwhelming consensus among Tourism Update readers that tour operators have a critical role to play in responsibly marketing the Great Migration to prevent peak season overcrowding at attractions such as river crossings.
A total of 93% of respondents to our latest poll agreed that tour operators have a responsibility to market the Great Migration in a way that helps to prevent overcrowding. Just 4% responded “No” to the question while 3% were “Unsure”.
Is Gauteng’s tourism sector as healthy as reported?
On August 10, Gauteng’s government reported that international tourist arrivals increased by more than 30% in the 2024/25 financial year – from 2.6 million to 3.8 million. The province also reported international tourism revenue of R41 billion (US$2.3 billion) – almost 30% above its stated target of R29 billion (US$1.6 billion).
The Gauteng Tourism Authority attributed the growth to strategic investment in “increased airlift capacity, new air routes, impact-driven destination marketing and the hosting of catalytic events”.
