THE Zululand Birding Route recently launched a user-friendly guide to bird watching in the North-Eastern region of KwaZulu Natal . The guide is in the form of a fold-up map with six clearly identified birding routes, covering 22 major birding sites, with each site briefly describing the birds most likely to be found. The map also features a montage of 22 species and the main towns and villages, distances, major highways and district roads clearly marked. According to Donald Leitch, chairman of the Zululand Birding Route Association, the guide is a culmination of research undertaken by the committee and well-known birding experts aimed at both novice and experienced bird watchers. The entire route encompasses more than ten different habitat types, which support in excess of 450 bird species, more than 55% of the total South African species. (Miguel de Sousa)
