SAA in a huff with BAA

SAA has expressed its determination to find a solution to fuel shortages in London after a stop to refuel in Milan recently resulted in a 36-hour delay due to snow and ground handling problems. Heathrow is experiencing serious fuel shortages as a result of the oil depot fire last year. Most airlines operating out of Heathrow, including SAA are now only supplied with 70% of their fuel requirements. SAA is unable to fly directly from London to Johannesburg with only 70% of the required fuel and therefore every second day, one of the three SAA flights from SA to Heathrow is forced to travel from London to Milan to refuel. SAA ceo, Khaya Ngqula has had two urgent meetings with the BAA but little relief has been granted. SAA stands firm with US-based airlines saying they believe the fuel rationing system discriminates against foreign carriers. (Sue Lewitton) suel@nowmedia.co.za
