Successful rhino dehorning at Sabi Sabi

Teams of skilled veterinarians, conservationists, helicopter pilots, anti-poaching units and Sabie Game Reserve (SGR) management carried out a rhino dehorning operation across SGR between May 19 and 21.

According to Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve, dehorning has proven to be an effective and humane deterrent to rhino poaching. There have been no rhino poaching incidents within the reserve since the Sabi Sabi dehorning programme launched in 2022.

During the dehorning process, vital data, including DNA samples, microchip placement and biometric measurements, are collected. The horn is removed above the growth plate and the remaining area is treated to protect the rhino from infection or cracking. Each rhino horn is securely tagged and matched to the rhino’s unique data profile.

As part of Sabi Sabi’s commitment to guest-driven conservation, the reserve invited 30 guests to witness the dehorning initiative in person. The guests could assist the team, under guidance, as well as observe the rhino’s recovery.

“Watching the teamwork, care and professionalism of the entire operation was inspiring. These vets and rangers are the unsung heroes of conservation. It was an emotional and unforgettable experience,” said a Sabi Sabi guest.
