Survey determines value of Durban's conference market

ALEC Gilbert, chief executive officer of ICC (International Convention Centre) Durban says the ICC has generated R2,5bn additional income for the KwaZulu Natal region, staging over 1 500 events and hosting over 800 000 people. This was revealed in an independent survey commissioned by ICC Durban as part of its five-year milestone to determine the value and importance of the conference industry to Durban, and to South Africa more generally. It was found that since opening in 1997, ICC Durban has undoubtedly generated significant revenue for the local and broader economies. This has occurred through the conferences and events it has secured and hosted for Durban and through the tourism opportunities created by the numerous international visitors it has brought not just to Durban, but to South Africa. Said Gilbert: "Not only has ICC boosted the local economy, it has served as a pioneer in the 'international convention centre' arena in this country and paved the way for other venues to follow."
