Tjommies keeping Cape Town Safe

A PARTNERSHIP between Cape Town Tourism and Men on the Side of the Road has seen the introduction of a pilot programme – Cape Town Tjommies.

Tjommies, local slang for friends, will sell themselves as local ambassadors for those visiting South Africa. Wearing branded uniforms, the tjommies will be ‘tourist friendly’ and assist visitors with information and support in Cape Town.

“We believe that the Cape Town Visitor Tjommies can play an integral part in our tourism offering now, during and beyond 2010, helping to make the visitor’s stay, local or international, unforgettable,” says Mariëtte du Toit-Helmbold, ceo Cape Town Tourism.

The volunteers for the programme have been thoroughly trained by the Central City Improvement District (CCID). Mo Hendricks, security manager CCID, said: “The Cape Town Tjommie initiative, being driven by Cape Town Tourism, is a huge step towards organisations cooperating to create a safe and secure Central City environment for Capetonians and visitors alike.”
