FOR the first time ever, the Port Elizabeth harbour has been included as a stop-over port for many of the world's large cruise liners.
The Oriana, hailed at the finest super-liner in the world, is set to sail into the city's harbour for an inaugural visit on January 22. Owned by the P&O group, and dubbed 'Queen of the Seas' by seasoned travellers, the ship will be the first of at least 10-12 vessels which will dock in the port this summer. The Oriana will be coming from the United Kingdom via Tenerife, Cape Verde, Walvis Bay and Cape Town and, on departure, will travel to Nossi Be, off Mauritius, the Seychelles, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand and the United States.
P&O Nedlloyd spokesman, Bobby Giles, said that since SA's political transition in 1994, the country's waters were being increasingly incorporated into world cruise itineraries.
Port Elizabeth's tourism industry is delighted by the news of the stop-offs, local stakeholders planning to give the ship's 1 822 passengers - and many of the 794 crew - a memorable stop-over.
