Botswana: Belmond Safaris unveils new Delta activities

Belmond Eagle Island Lodge has introduced horseback safaris.

Belmond Eagle Island Lodge in the Okavango Delta has introduced horseback rides with scenic helicopter transfers. The activity is available all year round.

“It was introduced at the beginning of October and the response has been exceptional,” says Sean Clark, Director of Sales & Marketing for Belmond Safaris.

The activity starts with a 15-minute scenic helicopter safari, with no doors, over the Okavango Delta as guests are taken to the private concession bordering on the Moremi Game Reserve where the horses live. After a full orientation, guests can enjoy either a half- or full-day horseback safari. This is followed by a return trip by helicopter to the lodge, Belmond Eagle Island Lodge.

Commenting on the new activity, Clark said: “A typical safari on open vehicles can become a bit tiresome, so we decided to showcase ways in which people can come on safari and engage with nature in completely different ways and to take the lead in making a safari as dynamic and exciting as possible.”

The activity is usually done in the early morning, and guests will ride for between three and six hours depending on whether they choose a half- or full-day excursion. A minimum horse-riding ability is required and the activity is only open to Belmond Eagle Island Lodge guests.
