Six cheetahs have been translocated from South Africa to Zambia’s North Luangwa National Park. The move reintroduces the species into the ecosystem after more than 30 years.
These cheetahs are the first steps towards restoring a self-sustaining cheetah population in the oldest section of Africa’s Great Rift Valley.
According to the Endangered Wildlife Trust, the three males and three females will begin a phased acclimatisation and release process into the 30 000 square kilometre park.
Another six cheetahs will be translocated towards the end of this year.
