Community backs De Rust tourism project

Community members of the historic Klein Karoo town of De Rust gathered for the first annual Mal’va De Rust propagation day when approximately 6 000 Malva cuttings were collected.

Created in response to the economic challenges caused by the closure of Meiringspoort, Mal’va De Rust has evolved into a community-driven tourism and regeneration initiative designed to attract visitors to the town.

The 6 000 cuttings represent the first phase of an ambitious vision to establish De Rust as a uniquely South African tourist destination. Under the guidance of Landscape Designer Leon Kluge, the project aims to propagate and distribute more than 20 000 Malva plants throughout De Rust and the surrounding area. If Namaqualand is famous for its spring daisies, De Rust hopes to become known for its Malva displays.
