SANParks has reopened Island Lake in the Wilderness section of the Garden Route National Park after recent water quality tests confirmed the absence of green-blue algal bloom. This follows three-month closure due to the presence of potentially harmful cyanobacteria in the lake.
It is now open for all recreational activities including kayaking, canoeing, swimming, birdwatching and picnicking.
In a press statement, SANParks said: “While we continue to monitor, it is important to note that such events may recur in the future as a result of changing climate and increasing pressure on the surrounding landscape.”
