Mauritian tourism delegates rallied together for marine conservation in a coral-planting excursion last week.
Delegates met at an assembly point in front of the Beachcomber Trou aux Biches, where they boarded small flotillas that took them out into the lagoon where two officials briefed the group on the coral planting programme.
The expedition was led by Tourism Minister Anil Gayan, who was the first to attach young coral bits – that were placed on board each of the boats – to a rope, and lower it into the water where divers then took the ropes and positioned them over the frame on the sea bed. The other delegates then followed suit.
Mauritius has a strong coral replanting programme, and five types of coral have been successfully planted over three main sites to date.
The delegates had all attended a number of tourism conferences and said it was a first to be invited to be part of a coral planting programme.
