The eThekwini Municipality has announced plans for a R1 billion (US$61.2 million) amusement and family entertainment park at the former Durban Funworld site with completion targeted for 2027.
“We are excited that this partnership allows the municipality to upgrade a key public amenity while securing significant private investment in the beachfront. This project will strengthen Durban’s position as a leading coastal destination and continue to attract visitors to enjoy our warm weather all year round,” said eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba.
The site occupies a prime position along the Durban beachfront promenade and forms part of the city’s broader strategy to revitalise the beachfront economy, attract private investment and support the ongoing renewal of the Golden Mile.
Planned attractions include the Lightning Roller Coaster, Disko 24, a vertical swing and a 0.15 hectare virtual reality theme park featuring more than 160 interactive games and e-sports activations. The project will be developed in partnership with two Italian amusement engineering firms associated with developments at Ferrari World, Universal Studios and Disneyland.
It will be led by Masithu Consulting and Project Managers, a Durban-based company with more than 17 years’ experience in large-scale urban developments. The development is expected to create about 900 construction jobs and more than 500 permanent operational jobs across hospitality, technical services and entertainment.
Additional features include pedestrian walkways, viewing decks, themed food courts and leisure areas. The park is positioned as an alcohol-free, family-oriented environment with zones catering to different age groups.
Construction will begin once outstanding statutory and commercial processes are concluded.
