THE Outeniqua Choo Tjoe will not be reintroduced until the George/Knysna rail line is regarded by authorities as safe to operate. According to Transnet, an alternative route is being introduced in the interim. As of November 2, until December 15, and from January 15, 2007 to March 31, 2007, the train will depart George on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 10h00 and arrive in Mossel Bay at 11h40. The train will then depart Mossel Bay at 13h00 and arrive in George at 14h30. The fares are as follows: *Adult: R70 single/R90 return *Children under 16 years: R40 single/R50 return *Under six years: free of charge As of December 15 to January 13, 2007, daily services will be available, except for Sundays. The costs remain the same, as do the departure and arrival times. An additional service has been introduced, departing Mossel Bay at 10h00, arriving in George at 11h40, and departing George 13h15 for arrival in Mossel Bay at 14h55. Says Kobus Volschenk, operations manager of the Outeniqua Choo Tjoe: “We would appreciate feedback from our tour operators and agents whether they will make use of this alternative and if the running times fit in with their itineraries. Should amendments be necessary to accommodate the majority this will be considered.” Email Kobus.volchenk@transnet.net with your comments. Natalia Thomson (nataliat@nowmedia.co.za)
