One of South Africa’s major attractions in the wintertime is the Sardine Run when billions of sardines migrate up the east coast of South Africa, creating a dramatic natural spectacle.
The migration is hypothesised to occur due to several different factors including sardine spawning season and the upwelling of cold, nutrient-rich water. This temporarily attracts South African Atlantic sardines to the east coast where they become trapped between the coast and the southward-flowing hot current.
