Thompsons Africa introduce hands-on Rhino experience

Thompsons Africa is offering guests an opportunity to participate in rhino conservation.

Thompsons Africa is offering guests an opportunity to play an active role in responsible tourism, by taking part in its recently-launched ‘hands on’ Rhino Conservation experience,

Valid until 31 November 2015, the Rhino Conservation Safari is an initiative of Camp Jabulani, situated in the private Kapama Game Reserve in Hoedspruit. The experience offers a unique insight into the White Rhino and its behavioural patterns.

Prior to venturing out on the full-day programme, guests undergo a comprehensive briefing on the process and are given specific roles.  A vet will then join the group, before setting off in a helicopter to dart the targeted animal. Once the rhino is darted and sedated, the participants join the specialist ranger team on the ground to assist with administering the necessary medication, taking measurements for scientific and medical purposes, and monitoring the animal while it is still sedated. They also witness the rhino horn being drilled for the insertion of a microchip and an ear notching procedure for future identification. Both of these tasks play a vital role in the preservation of the rhino.

The four night package includes accommodation, meals and snacks at Camp Jabulani; an elephant back safari; game drives; bush walks; and a visit to the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre. Return road transfers to and from Hoedspruit Airport are also includes, while a comprehensive children’s programme, is available if required.
