Tourists encouraged to practise safe and responsible tourism

International and domestic tourists are being encouraged to practise safe and responsible tourism this holiday season in a joint awareness campaign by the Department of Tourism, the V&A Waterfront, Robben Island Museum (RIM) and Western Cape Tourism.

The theme for the campaign is #WeDoTourismResponsibly and urges tourists to:

  • Obey the rules of the road
  • Ensure the safety of children
  • Reduce their carbon footprint
  • Preserve the cultural and environmental aesthetic of tourism destinations.

“The holiday season provides an ideal opportunity for us to encourage tourists to travel in a safe and responsible manner,” said Lulama Duma, Deputy Director General at the Department of Tourism. “The #WeDoTourismResponsibly campaign that we rolled out at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town is the first of a number of awareness initiatives that we will be conducting in various provinces, and ahead of all the holidays in 2018.”
The campaign is the Department of Tourism’s response to government’s call to encourage safety during the holidays.

“We hope that by inculcating a culture of safe and responsible tourism practices, we can contribute to reducing incidents of misconduct and reaffirm our country’s competitiveness and attractiveness in offering safe and authentic tourism experiences,” added Duma.

Pamphlets were handed out to tourists by officials from the Department of Tourism, RIM and Western Cape Tourism with information on responsible tourism practices and the contact details of the Tourism Complaints Officer.
