Overberg and Gordon’s Bay area battling fires
Fires were still raging in the Gordon’s Bay area on Tuesday, having started in the Overberg District on the weekend and spread to the coast early Monday morning. Several people were evacuated from the area on Monday night and a few homes were damaged. Thousands of hectares of fynbos have been destroyed in the Overberg and Helderberg. Corlie Hugo, deputy manager of the Kogelberg Nature Reserve, said on Tuesday they were still battling the fire, though it was still quite some distance from the reception, accommodation and hiking trail. The reserve was at the time still open to the public. There have been no injuries reported.
Fires at this time of the year are not uncommon as the threat increases due to the hot, dry and windy conditions. On Monday the SA Weather Service issued a high fire danger rating for the rest of this week.
