Zimbabwe’s Grande Dame gets a facelift

The Victoria Falls Hotel, Zimbabwe, has completed the first phase of a renovation.

The Victoria Falls Hotel in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, has undergone the first phases of a renovation project.

At a recent trade event, African Sun, Chairman, Herbert Nkala, revealed some of the changes to the 112-year-old hotel. He said the group valued the suggestions of the trade, which helped it to remain focused on guests’ needs. “Keep the feedback coming as it can only make us better.”

Nkala said the stable wing suites and public areas had all been redone as part of the first phase.

The second phase will see the remainder of the hotel gutted, with some of the walls knocked down to increase the size of certain rooms. The Livingstone room has also been revamped and there are new chill-out areas around pool.

Victoria Falls Hotel GM, Giulio Togni, emphasised that renovations were in keeping with the existing look and feel of the property, not modernising it.

Togni said the Bush Tracks Express was launched in March 2016 and that the carriages of the steam train had been kitted out by Rovos Rail. “We run this product twice a week on to the bridge, serving canapés.”

Nkala was upbeat about the future of the resort town, which has recently seen the expansion of Victoria Falls Airport. He said Emirates would start services to Victoria Falls in March and that other airlines were looking to service the new airport, but he was not at liberty to disclose these details.
