Salaries for February showed a 5% increase in the number of people receiving 100% of their salary – a total of 37% of the 166 respondents compared with 32% of the 163 respondents in January’s poll.
Following on last year’s poll, every month, Tourism Update will continue to pose the question: “What percentage of your salary were you paid this month?”
The informal poll was launched to give a snapshot of how the industry was recovering as the months progressed.
A total of 28% of respondents still earn below 19% of their salary or are unemployed as a result of COVID-19.

After two years of disrupted travel due to ever-changing COVID-19 restrictions, airlines and tour operators are once again bracing for closed skies, cancellations and a cloud of uncertainty over international travel following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The short-term impact could be diverted or cancelled flights and while Iata says it is too early to estimate what the near-term consequences of the Russia/Ukraine war will be for aviation, and tourism in general, it says it is clear that there are downside risks, in particular in markets with exposure to the conflict.
The impact on airline costs as a result of fluctuations in energy prices or rerouting to avoid Russian airspace could have broader implications. Consumer confidence and economic activity are likely to be impacted even outside of Eastern Europe.
At Meetings Africa in Johannesburg last week, Tourism Update heard from several operators and suppliers that tourists from Eastern Europe had cancelled their trips to Southern Africa.
