A Cape Town-based trio of leading green architects have been appointed as the architectural design team for the R690 million expansion of the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC).
The expansion will include 10 000 sqm of new convention space and meeting rooms over the next three years. CTICC2 will be a four-star green building, and will form part of a redeveloped Foreshore precinct, comprising retail space, a hospital, hotel and an office tower.
Piet Bakker of Stauch Vorster Architects, Mokena Makeka of Makeka Design Lab and Anya Van der Merwe of Van der Merwe Miszewski Architects were appointed following an open public tender process, assisted by an independent international and local advisory panel. Nineteen tenders were received including submissions from international architectural teams.
According to Rashid Toefy, CEO of the CTICC: “The first spade should be in the ground within a year’s time with a soft opening planned for June 2015. The CTICC is already accepting soft bookings for the new building for 2016 and beyond, and will start taking hard bookings from the beginning of 2013.”
He said the expansion would not only allow Cape Town to host massive events such as the Tourism Indaba but will also make it possible for the city to host multiple large events simultaneously. “Both outcomes are in line with the needs of local and international meeting and event organisers.”
Toefy said the next step was to appoint quantity surveyors and project managers and over the next three months, would start engaging with users, suppliers and the public for comment.
“Convention and exhibition spaces like the CTICC are our modern-day cathedrals or city halls – this is where we go to meet, learn and be inspired. We’re confident this new space will be an iconic meeting place on the African continent.”
