The arrival of the first cruise vessel to sail directly from Asia to the Port of Mombasa has boosted Kenya’s cruise season with cruise visitor numbers already surpassing those recorded during the previous season.

The MS Viking Yidun docked at the Port of Mombasa on Tuesday, July 7, carrying 717 tourists and 489 crew members. According to Kenya News Agency, the vessel is the first cruise ship to sail directly from Asia to the Kenyan port.

Kenya is expected to receive 20 cruise vessels before the end of 2026.

The 228 metre vessel, which has passenger capacity of 930, arrived with tourists of various nationalities – the majority from China. Visitors were welcomed by Mijikenda cultural performers before departing on excursions to attractions across Kenya.
