Black rhinos still on the cards for Zim national park

Gonarezhou Conservation Trust has postponed plans to reintroduce up to 30 Black rhinos in Zimbabwe’s Gonarezhou National Park.

This year the trust had planned to re-introduce the animals to be sourced from the country’s other national parks such as Malilangwe Trust, Bubye Valley Conservancy, and Save Conservancy.

Gonarezhou is managed by the trust, a new model for protected area management drawn up between the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority and the Frankfurt Zoological Society.

Trust Director, Hugo van der Westhuizen, said: “We are still busy with plans to re-introduce rhinos next year. A final plan has not yet been approved by the trustees but hopefully will be soon.”

Security levels at the park have improved to the extent that a rhino reintroduction project is now feasible.
