Botswana to translocate cheetahs to India

Botswana’s Ministry of Environment and Tourism has confirmed that eight live cheetahs will be translocated from Botswana to India for conservation purposes under Project Cheetah, which is aimed at reintroducing the species into their historical range in India.

The announcement followed a four-day mission by a three-member Indian government delegation invited by Botswana’s Ministry of Environment and Tourism. The visit included discussions on wildlife management collaboration and visits to potential source sites.

Botswana has a stable wild cheetah population of 1 694 (approximately 24% of the global population). The government has agreed to India’s request for eight cheetahs through the translocation complying with the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.

The government of India will cover all costs related to capture, transportation and veterinary services during the exercise.
